Leadership Pathways: Roberta "Bobbie" Stergar, PT, DPT
Positions Served
Education Review Committee Reviewer and Chair, SACE Item Writer
Motivation & Decision to Run
Once I received my transitional doctorate and my children were older, I realized it was time to give back to my profession. I really like the idea of reviewing the content of potential continuing education classes, which is how I started on the education review committee. When it was time for a change in chairperson, I thought about it and decided I could continue to give back to the academy in a larger role. It's been very rewarding to help the academy. Continue to be the gold standard of pelvic physical therapy and education.
Skills & Professional Growth
I have become better at using technology, improved my ability to give meaningful constructive criticism/input in a professional manner, and I have learned how much our administrative staff members have to do to keep the academy functioning well.
Involvement & Pathways
Initially, I received an email with a call for reviewers. I thought I would be a good fit to be a reviewer. I really enjoy the flexibility of the ERC. I am able to choose my availabilit,y which allows me to be very active when I am able as well as step back when I have too many other commitments.
I see our profession as one that is growing and progressing, a profession that is respected in the community.
Impact & Benefits
I found that I am passionate about evidence-based education. I am better at critical thinking when learning.
Value of Service
I think being a professional means we give back to our profession to continue to grow.
What would you tell a colleague who doesn’t think they’re “qualified enough” to run?
Give it a go. It isn't about perfection. You can learn what you don't know while providing excellent leadership.
