Overview

In this live, webinar course, we teach Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, and Student Physical Therapists clinically relevant information and training for the examination, evaluation, and intervention of pelvic floor dysfunction as it presents in patients with neurological diagnoses. Topics will address clinical presentations of bowel, bladder, and sexual dysfunction in patients with diagnoses such as traumatic brain injury, spinal cord and peripheral nerve injuries, neurodegenerative conditions, and autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Information for evaluation and treatment for patients with psychiatric conditions, adult developmental disorders, and older adults will also be included. Clinical decision-making capabilities and an integration of skills acquired in prior level coursework will be included. Skills can be immediately applied in your clinic.

This course is affiliated with the Academy's Certificate of Achievement in Pelvic Health Physical Therapy (CAPP-Pelvic) Program. Although pursuing the CAPP-Pelvic certification is optional, we highly recommend it for all eligible individuals, especially those already engaged in CAPP-Pelvic affiliated courses, to attain the CAPP-Pelvic distinction.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

Examination/Evaluation:

Define and identify the pathophysiological mechanisms of pelvic floor dysfunction that occurs within patients with neurological diagnoses, psychiatric and developmental disorders, and older adult patients.
Describe and develop skills to perform an appropriate systematic interview and examination of patients with the above diagnoses using objective assessment strategies.

Diagnosis/Prognosis:

Differentiate between musculoskeletal, neurological, and other conditions that require intervention based on the results of examination.
Describe the diagnoses and impairments best suited to physical therapy intervention for the treatment of neurological pelvic floor dysfunction.
Identify and utilize prognostic indicators including, but not limited to, objective data and functional outcome measures to aid in course of physical therapy intervention. Intervention:
Develop an evidence-based plan of care, including appropriate intervention, to address multiple components related to patients with the above diagnoses.
Identify intervention strategies including, but not limited to, manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, behavioral intervention, and appropriate clinical application of modalities as supported by evidence in treatment of patients with neurological diagnoses.

Licensed Physical Therapist (PT)
Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA)
2nd Year Physical Therapy Student (SPT)
3rd Year Physical Therapy Student (SPT)
No other professional types are permitted for this course. No exceptions will be made

PREREQUISITES

Successful completion of the PH1 Webinar + PH1 Lab (or PH1 Combined), PH2 Bowel Dysfunction Webinar, PH2 Pelvic Pain Webinar, and PH2 Lab.
Experience of 1 year or more in regularly managing patients with pelvic physical therapy, or working in a clinic with other experienced pelvic physical therapists, is strongly recommended prior to attending this course; lack of experience may greatly inhibit participant comprehension and attainment of skills during the course.

WHAT ELSE YOU SHOULD KNOW

This course is the last required course for the Certificate of Achievement in Pelvic Health Physical Therapy certification program. If you have taken a similar or equivalent coursework to our PH1 and PH2 courses as a pre-requisites through an outside organization, the courses you have taken must include both vaginal and rectal assessments. Please note that you must complete all coursework through the Academy of Pelvic Health Physical Therapy to be eligible for the CAPP (Certificate of Achievement in Physical Therapy program).
If you have taken a similar or equivalent coursework to our PH1 and PH2 courses as a pre-requisites through another organization, the coursework you have taken must include both vaginal and rectal assessments. Please note that if you pursue this route, you will not be eligible to participate in the Certificate of Achievement in Pelvic Health Physical Therapy (CAPP-Pelvic) program. Only those who complete all coursework through the Academy are eligible to obtain the CAPP.

WEBINAR ENGAGEMENT REQUIREMENT

You must actively participate throughout the entire webinar. If you are not responsive when you are being called on during the webinar, your course credit may be forfeited and you may be required to retake the course. We have included planned break times in the schedule, however, instructors may also announce any additional break times during the course. If you have any technical difficulties accessing Zoom or the Learning Center, you must immediately contact hello@aptapelvichealth.org to let us know.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT

Attendees must be present throughout the duration of the course. Contact hours will be forfeited and the attendee will be dismissed if the attendee:

Misses two (2) or more lecture hours
Misses any part of the Case Study Presentation and related group activities

To advance to the next course level, the attendee who missed the above will have to retake the course at her/his/their own expense.

Should extenuating circumstances arise, it is the responsibility of the participant to notify a course faculty member of the need to leave. Consideration for course completion will be made on a case-by-case basis.

CEU APPROVAL

Unless otherwise noted in the course description, the Academy of Pelvic Health Physical Therapy does not independently seek approval for course Continuing Education Unit (CEU) numbers in each state. It is the responsibility of each participant to submit their own CEU applications within their respective states. We are committed to assisting you in obtaining and supplying any required documentation for your CEU application. Historically, our course participants have consistently encountered no difficulties in securing approval for continuing education credits (CEUs) upon submission to their state's board.
