A Genderqueer Therapist's Perspective on Inclusion in Pelvic Therapy
Clinical and Professional Settings

As a queer non-binary pelvic therapist, I offer a unique perspective on inclusive practices in the physical therapy field. In recent years, I have attended multiple continuing education courses and professional gatherings in which I was the only provider introducing myself with pronouns, and where heterosexual/cisnormative language remains the standard. If LGBTQ+ Physical Therapists are experiencing a lack of belonging within our field, how does this reflect on our patients' experiences? While there are emerging courses on how to treat LGBTQ+ populations for pelvic PTs, they must be sought after by the treating therapist, therefore limiting the breadth of implementation.

Considering a Gallup poll indicates 22.3% of Gen Z identifies as LGBTQ+, it is imperative to standardize care to ensure inclusivity by all pelvic therapists.

How can we successfully integrate the inclusive practices introduced in educational settings into clinical norms? Changing language and practices that have dominated PT behavior can be daunting for practitioners.

This discussion is designed to provide therapists with tangible steps and exercises that will enhance comfort with inclusive language, practices, and shift mindsets to provide both culturally competent work environments and the highest level of patient care.
