Empowering Through Pelvic Health: My Journey into Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy

Posted By: Jinyi Li Member Spotlight,

During my tenure as an athletic trainer, I had the privilege of working with several powerlifting athletes, some of whom struggled with urinary leakage during their lifts. While a few were comfortable sharing their experiences, others were more hesitant, unsure of how to approach the topic. At that time, my understanding of pelvic health was limited, and I often felt powerless, only able to refer them to a physical therapist who could hopefully provide the specialized care they needed.

This experience planted a seed in my mind—a desire to learn more about pelvic health so that I could offer more than just a referral. When I entered my physical therapy curriculum, I made a commitment to dive deep into pelvic floor physical therapy. I wanted to be the clinician who could not only address these sensitive issues but also empower individuals to reclaim their passion for activities without the burden of symptoms holding them back.

To fulfill this commitment, I began by completing the APTA Pelvic Health Level 1 webinar and lab, which introduced me to the foundational concepts of pelvic floor physical therapy. Building on this, I pursued Level 2 webinars that focused on pelvic pain and bowel dysfunction, further broadening my knowledge and skills. Each step in my education reinforced my dedication to this field.

My clinical rotation at USC Marengo Physical Therapy was a turning point. Here, I had the opportunity to apply what I had learned in a real-world setting, working with a diverse population facing a variety of pelvic health challenges. The experience was not just educational; it was deeply rewarding. I discovered a genuine passion for helping people navigate their pelvic health issues—whether it was addressing pain, improving function, or simply providing a listening ear to those who had felt unheard for too long.

What drives me now is the knowledge that I can make a tangible difference in someone's life. Pelvic health is often a silent struggle for many, and the ability to offer support, guidance, and effective treatment is a responsibility I take to heart. I am eager to continue expanding my expertise and contributing to the field of pelvic floor physical therapy, with the goal of helping as many people as possible achieve a symptom-free, active lifestyle.
