The Physical Therapy for Pregnancy Webinar (OB-Ante Webinar) is conducted 100% virtually through a live webinar format. This course will provide practical, evidence-based knowledge and skill in physical therapy evaluation and intervention with the pregnant patient. Instruction includes: anatomical and physiologic changes in pregnancy; pregnancy-specific changes in posture and gait; differential diagnosis; examination and treatment of common musculoskeletal conditions in pregnancy including pelvic girdle pain; core muscle function; biomechanical strategies; exercise and wellness in pregnancy. Additionally, advanced clinical decision making with these populations is discussed.

After completing this webinar, participants are eligible to attend the live (Physical Therapy for Pregnancy and Postpartum Lab (OB-AntePost Lab). Participants are encouraged to take both the Physical Therapy for Pregnancy Webinar (OB-Ante Webinar) and the Physical Therapy for Postpartum Webinar (OB-Post Webinar), however, the completion of one is sufficient to attend the live lab.

The Physical Therapy for Postpartum Webinar (OB-Post Webinar) is conducted 100% virtually through a live webinar format. This course will provide practical, evidence-based knowledge and skill in physical therapy evaluation and intervention with the postpartum patient. Didactic instruction includes: postpartum recovery; early evaluation and interventions; differential diagnosis; lactation; obstetric birth injuries; musculoskeletal conditions; pelvic floor considerations; examination and treatment of diastasis recti; return to sport. Additionally, advanced clinical decision making with these populations is discussed.

After completing this webinar, participants are eligible to attend the live (Physical Therapy for Pregnancy and Postpartum Lab (OB-AntePost Lab). Participants are encouraged to take both the Physical Therapy for Pregnancy Webinar (OB-Ante Webinar) and the Physical Therapy for Postpartum Webinar (OB-Post Webinar), however, the completion of one is sufficient to attend the live lab.

The Physical Therapy for Labor and Birth course is a two-part course series composed of an OB-Intra Webinar and an OB-Intra Lab course. The OB-Intra Webinar is a prerequisite for the OB-Intra Lab course. The OB-Intra Webinar course is conducted 100% virtually through a live webinar format. The course is didactic and provides the physical therapy professional with an in-depth understanding of how specific physical therapy interventions during the antepartum and intrapartum periods may affect birth outcomes and postpartum maternal health. Practical, evidence-based knowledge and advanced skills in providing therapeutic and educational support are included. Didactic instruction includes: maternal pelvis anatomic characteristics and biomechanical considerations for childbirth, orthopedic diagnosis considerations, causes and management of dysfunctional labor, psychosocial considerations in childbirth, labor and vaginal delivery, cesarean delivery.

The Physical Therapy for the Medically Complex Pregnancy On-Demand Webinar (OB-Med On-Demand Webinar) is conducted 100% virtually through a self-paced format. This didactic webinar provides practical, evidence-based knowledge and skill in physical therapy evaluation and intervention with advanced topics in pregnancy. Didactic instruction includes: high risk pregnancy medical diagnoses and interventions; evaluation and interventions for pregnant people on bedrest; physical therapy considerations for special populations including individuals with cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions, neurologic conditions; endocrine disorders and complex orthopedic conditions. Additionally, advanced clinical decision making with these populations is discussed. There are no pre-requisites for this course. 

9 Contact Hours 

Physical Therapy for Pregnancy and Postpartum Lab (OB-AntePost Lab) is conducted 100% in-person and is open to all participants who have taken Fundamental Topics of Pregnancy & Postpartum Physical Therapy Webinar, Physical Therapy for the Pregnant Patient Webinar (coming fall 2025), or Physical Therapy for the Postpartum Patient Webinar (coming fall 2025). 

During this lab course, participants will learn and practice the necessary skills to effectively evaluate and treat pregnant people. Topics include: lumbopelvic, hip examination and special tests, thoracic spine evaluation and treatment, modifications of the pregnant examination, diastasis rectus abdominis examination and intervention; external pelvic floor assessment and exercise (NO internal pelvic floor techniques); therapeutic exercise in pregnancy and postpartum; cesarean scar assessment and mobilization techniques, and biomechanical strategies. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to practice with various pregnancy support belts and garments.

During the lab, participants will work in groups of 2-3. Everyone will participate as both “clinician” and “patient” and receive in the moment feedback and tips from instructors. All participants will participate in comprehensive situational lab scenarios to integrate learned skills. All people can fully participate in this lab, including people of any gender and individuals who are pregnant. 

Upon completion of this lab course, participants will have expanded examination and treatment skills to support the pregnant and postpartum patients.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

Examination/Evaluation:

  1. Perform an examination of a pregnant or postpartum patient with:

    1. Low back pain

    2. Pelvic girdle pain

    3. Hip pain 

    4. Thoracic pain

  2. Assess for diastasis rectus abdominis with objective measurement skills

  3. Perform an external assessment of pelvic floor muscle function 

Diagnosis/Prognosis:

  1. Utilize objective measurements to screen for medical referral

  2. Differentiate between low back, pelvic girdle and hip pain/dysfunction.

Intervention:

  1. Develop an evidence-based plan of care for physical therapy intervention of pregnant or postpartum patients with musculoskeletal impairments or dysfunction

  2. Demonstrate manual therapy interventions for the treatment of cesarean scars

  3. Describe effective cues to contract and relax the pelvic floor and transverse abdominal muscles 

  4. Explain ideal biomechanical strategies for pregnant or postpartum patients

8.5 Contact Hours

Physical Therapy for Labor and Birth Lab(OB-Intra Lab) is conducted 100% in-person and is open to all participants who have taken Intrapartum Topics of Obstetric Physical Therapy Webinar or Physical Therapy for Labor and Birth Webinar.

The OBI Lab course offers skills that are immediately applicable to clinical practice and include: preparation for childbirth, assessing the pelvis and coccyx, positions for promoting efficient labor, hands-on interventions for dysfunctional labor and labor with orthopedic considerations, and physical and mental coping including hands-on techniques. 

During the lab, participants will work in groups of 2-3. Everyone will participate as both “clinician” and “patient” and receive in the moment feedback and tips from instructors. All participants will participate in comprehensive situational lab scenarios to integrate learned skills. All people can fully participate in this lab, including people of any gender and individuals who are pregnant. 

Upon completion of this lab course, participants will have expanded therapeutic and educational strategies to support the pregnant client in optimizing labor, delivery, and acute postpartum recovery.

  1. Assess the dimension of the pelvic outlet

  2. Perform an external assessment of the coccyx 

Diagnosis / Prognosis

  1. Distinguish maternal positioning needs based on fetal station and stage of labor 

  2. Differentiate maternal positioning needs based on orthopedic dysfunctions

Intervention

  1. Demonstrate positions and techniques to increase the pelvic outlet and inlet

  2. Demonstrate manual techniques for relieve back labor and perineal discomfort

  3. Describe mental coping techniques including imagery, framing, breath, vocalization and relaxation

Caitlin Smigelski, PT, DPT 

Dr. Smigelski is a pelvic floor physical therapist in Portland, OR. She treats pelvic floor dysfunction in adults of all genders and specializes in transgender health and obstetrics. Caitlin values active treatment approaches and teaching individuals ways to manage and improve their symptoms. She is active with the Academy of Pelvic Health Physical Therapy and serves on the CAPP-OB Committee. 

 

Juan Michelle Martin, PT, DPT

Dr. Juan Michelle Martin is a licensed physical therapist with over 16 years of experience, specializing in orthopedic and pelvic floor therapy. Additionally, she is a birth and postpartum doula and a certified sex counselor. Dr. Martin is the owner of JMM Health Solutions in metro Atlanta, focused on pelvic, perinatal, and sexual health. In addition to her clinical work, she is an adjunct professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at South College (Atlanta) and an instructor in the obstetrics courses for the Academy of Pelvic Health (APTA). Dr. Martin is an Evidence Based Birth instructor and educator and a certified doula instructor. She has been a 2x international best-selling author, has assisted in co-authoring some texts pertaining to pelvic health, and is a member of several international pelvic and sexual health organizations. 

Dr. Martin is a mentor to other healthcare professionals, both clinically and in business, and she is the curator of the Zero to Telehealth coaching program, where she has helped hundreds of professionals implement telehealth in their practice, including therapists, physicians, nurses, and chiropractors. She has shared her expertise in many domains, including industry events such as the APTA's Private Practice Section conference, university guest lectures, national and international talks, workshops, and webinars geared towards clinicians. She has served as a member of the Southeastern Telehealth Resource Center (SETRC) telehealth task force since 2019 to assist in language regarding telehealth/telemedicine as well as the implementation of telehealth in a variety of medical and allied healthcare practices within the region and beyond.
