Yoga and Meditation for Pelvic Health

Course Description

This interactive 2-day, 16-hour course is designed with the pelvic health therapist in mind but is open to any physical therapist who is interested in learning more about yoga as an intervention for many different health conditions. History of yoga and meditation as traditions that have deep roots in Eastern medicine will be provided. The participant will learn about research on yoga and meditation for pregnant patients and those with persistent pain, osteoporosis, urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and functional bowel disorders.

Day 2: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Pacific Standard Time (US) 10:45 AM – 11:00 AM (Morning break), 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM (Lunch break)

Eligibility Requirement: This course is open to licensed PTs, PTAs and open to PT students.

  • Certificate of Completion (issued upon 80% or higher score on exam)

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this series, the learner will:

  • Participants will be educated on the history of yoga, types of yoga and yoga terminology. Special emphasis will be placed on similarities between Eastern and Western medicine. Participants will be invited to evaluate their own Dosha to learn how best to manage their own health.
  • Participants will have a greater understanding of the stress response and the influence of yoga and meditation on modulating this response. An introduction to polyvagal theory as proposed by Dr. Stephen Porges will be provided.
  • Participants will practice yoga asana and meditation in a group setting and will have a chance to experience the health benefits of both. No prior experience in either is required.
  • Participants will learn about current research supporting yoga and meditation for a variety of health conditions relating to urinary, bowel, reproductive and musculoskeletal systems. Specific topics include pregnancy, incontinence, prolapse, functional bowel disorders, pelvic pain and geriatrics/aging populations.
  • Participants will have a better understanding of evolving therapies, integrative health systems, and caring for themselves as caregivers.
  • Patients will have a greater understanding of how to design a yoga program for their patients addressing current muscle training theories, muscle synergies and the mind-body connection.
