Physical Therapy in Gender-Affirming Care:

Transgender Health

(TRANS)

This 2-day lecture style and class activity course is aimed at teaching physical therapist who already have skills in pelvic physical therapy how to expand those skills into working with people of all gender identities regarding medical or surgical aspects of transition. It would also be appropriate for any physical therapist who has an interest in better serving people who are gender diverse. There will be particular education regarding gender affirming genital surgeries as well as discussion of other gender affirming surgeries and medical interventions that people transitioning might choose.

Saturday, Day 1: 8:00am-6:00pm (8.5 hours) *Registration begins at 7:30am
Sunday, Day 2: 8:00am-3:30pm (6.5 hours)
Total: 15 Contact Hours

Format: Lectures and external lab work.

Course Eligibility & Prerequisites

You must be a Licensed Physical Therapist (PT), Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA), Student Physical Therapist (SPT). You do not have to specialize in pelvic health physical therapy, all types of PTs, PTAs and SPTs are eligible to take this course.

Assignments
Pre-readings will be provided electronically to course participants for completion prior to the course. An electronic lecture manual will be provided in the online Learning Center along with the post-course final exam, survey and a Course Completion.  A printed lab manual will be provided on-site.

Topics covered will include:

  • Societal influence on gender transition including interactions with health care providers;
  • Recognizing difference between sex, sexuality, and gender;
  • Understand the complexities of the legal system for the person transitioning gender;
  • Tips and tools for a trauma informed intake and examination;
  • Health effects of hormones for gender transition as related to differential diagnosis in PT;
  • Supporting healing after gender affirming surgery;
  • Operative procedures for face and chest;
  • Operative procedures for masculinizing and feminizing genital surgery;
  • Pre-operative evaluation, treatment and education issues, post- operative evaluation, treatment, education and follow up for genital surgeries;
  • Outcome measures with rehab focus for people undergoing gender affirming surgeries and.
  • Fertility and pregnancy in transgender people

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Define sex, gender, and sexuality or sexual orientation

2. Learn open ended questions regarding relationship and sexual activity intake questions

3. Understand societal and legal aspects of gender transition

4. Describe hormone related issues for people during transition

5. Review suggested outcome measures with rehab focus for people undergoing gender affirming surgeries.

6. Describe the surgical procedures for orchiectomy, vaginoplasty, vulvoplasty, phalloplasty, metoidioplasty, and mastectomy and breast augmentation

7. Describe common musculoskeletal and pelvic floor issues to address prior to and after female-to-male gender affirming genital surgery. Metoidioplasty Phalloplasty, scrotoplasty, Vaginectomy, hysterectomy

8. Describe common musculoskeletal and pelvic floor issues to address prior to and after male-to-female gender affirming genital surgery. Orchiectomy, Vulvoplasty, Vaginoplasty.

9. Demonstrate knowledge of the varied vaginoplasty dilation protocols across the USA.

Foreign-Educated Physical Therapists

English Language Proficiency

If you are a foreign-educated physical therapist, you will need to pass the TOEFL(Test of English as a Foreign Language) and meet the score requirements. There are some exemptions to the TOEFL requirement for individuals who are exempt under the USCIS regulations. TOEFL scores must be reported directly to APHPT for the purposes of determining eligibility for course attendance. The minimum TOEFL scores we require are the following: Reading: 21; Listening: 18; Writing: 24; Speaking: 26.
