This downloadable home study course is intended to give the practicing physical therapists a working knowledge of surface electromyography (SEMG) instrumentation. Quality treatment of patient with pelvic dysfunction requires a comprehensive understanding of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and many treatment modalities. SEMG is only one part of a complete treatment. However, incomplete knowledge of SEMG can result in poor or incorrect application, interpretation, or treatments. Strong knowledge of instrumentation will enhance the quality of SEMG treatments and patient outcomes. This material will describe basic concepts applicable to all forms of SEMG. It is intended to familiarize the reader with basic SEMG instrumentation concepts. Fundamentals of electronics and definitions of important terms pertaining to components of instrumentation and other components and their effects in the recording environment are presented. The goal is to present the reader with essential terms and enough information to be able to identify noise and artifacts in clinical situations, and, to assist in scrutinizing research papers with increased rigor. This module is necessary to complete the didactic education for the BCIA pelvic muscle dysfunction certificate.
