Preconference #1 | March 2020 (Dates To Be Determined)

Let’s Talk About Sex!  Sex Counseling for the Pelvic Health Therapist

Sexual Counseling within the physical therapy profession is essential for helping patients optimize their sexual function as their bodies are changing throughout the lifespan. To be an effective counselor, you have to understand the intersecting factors of race, gender, orientation, culture, and ability. For providers in all specialties (pelvic health, neuro, ortho, oncology) talking about sex can seem tricky, taboo, and maybe even nebulous. In this talk, we aim to give you a more in-depth understanding of human sexuality and straight-forward counseling tools and skills to help your patients engage in satisfying sexual practices.

  1. Participants will be able to verbalize and understand the difference in sex counseling and sex therapy and understand how sex counseling skills fall into their profession.
  2. Participants will be able to demonstrate use of DOUPE history taking for sexual inquiry.
  3. Participants will have a basic knowledge of various popular types of kink and BDSM activities and how they might affect pelvic health.
  4. Participants will be able to recognize their own trauma responses.
  5. Participants will be able to recognize and take steps to de-escalate a trauma response in another person.
  6. Participants with bee able to design a biopsychosocial framework approach to designing a sexual health plan of care.
  7. Participants will be able to coach patients through communication techniques with patients.
  8. Participants will understand how to avoid normative language to create a safer environment in which their patient/client does not have to actively “out” themselves as part of their intake history.

Preconference #2 | March 2020 (Dates To Be Determined)

Pelvic Health Physical Therapy and Cancer

Cancers in the pelvis account for a relatively large percentage of new diagnoses for both cis-males and females.  Side effects can occur with any type of cancer treatment, whether that be surgical, radiation, or chemotherapy. The severity and type of side effects will depend on the specific area or organs effected, size of area treated, type and amount of surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and overall health and co-morbidities. Pelvic health physiotherapy is uniquely positioned to address symptoms of cancer treatment including urinary, bowel and sexual dysfunction.  This evidenced based course discusses a whole-person approach that can help improve the quality of life in this extremely under-serviced population.

  1. Discuss different types of pelvic cancers
  2. Become familiar with the medical treatments for various pelvic cancers
  3. Understand the side effects of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation
  4. Discuss various dilator protocols that are used after pelvic cancer/radiation
  5.  Understand the evidence behind the role of physiotherapy as a multidisciplinary team member during and after cancer diagnosis and treatment
