Sexual Pain: Navigating Care For Cisgender Men

About the Course

Accounting for nearly two million doctor visits per year in the United states, countless men experience pain ‘down there’ with little to no help. Endless specialists, traumatic medical experiences, failed treatments, pain with erections, and the incessant search for a cure leaves no time (or energy) for fun in the bedroom. Sexual health, intimacy, and pain are all intertwined which is no surprise that this clinical enigma leaves men feeling socially isolated and hopeless. In this one-day course, you’ll gain an understanding of male urogenital anatomy (and the science behind erections), recognize socio-cultural barriers that men face seeking pain care for their most intimate parts, and tool up on resources to help them reconnect with their sexual identity and pain-free pleasure!

This course is intentionally focused on cisgender men. I would like to acknowledge that there is necessary work needed around transgender men, non-binary and gender expansive people. In preparation for our time together, please come prepared with a short synopsis of a male patient case that you would like peer support around. If you don’t have a male patient case to write-up, think of a potential case that would pique your interest.

1. Participants will understand the biological, psychological and social impacts of chronic pelvic pain in men and how these complex set of interactions influence their lived experience of pain and sexual well-being.

By the end of this course, participants will:

    • Verbally give three examples of how pelvic pain impacts men using the biopsychosocial framework after watching a video in small groups.
    • When given a case description, in small groups, be able to identify at least one potential pain type and one potential trigger that could influence the person’s symptoms and ongoing pain maintenance.
    • In small groups, identify six ways to reduce barriers for men not seeking help for pelvic pain and sexual health concerns by writing down one change they plan to make within their current practice setting/approach.
    • Identify three ways that masculinity influences pain and access to care by sharing one specific example that demonstrates these influences in large group discussion.
    • In a forced choice activity, identify and describe their comfort level addressing male sexual health concerns by choosing one psychosocial activity that they would feel reluctant to try with a male patient and practicing this activity with another participant in pairs.

2. Participants will increase their knowledge about and comfort with male sexual health concerns using a biopsychosocial approach.

By the end of this course, participants will:

    • Explain male pelvic anatomy and sexual function in small groups using any media tool of their choice to support their explanation.
    • When role playing a case description, be able to ask three sexual health specific questions that provide insight into the biological, psychological and social underpinnings of the case’s distressing concerns.
    • In large group discussion, using a spectrogram, identify at least one reservation they have working with men who have pelvic health or sexual health concerns.
    • When given a case description, in small groups, develop a treatment plan that includes one intervention/activity that will address each of the following categories biological, psychological, and sociocultural impacts related to their case.

  • Electronic course materials (12-month access)
  • 10 question multiple-choice question exam and survey (30 days to complete after the course)
  • Certificate of Completion (issued upon 80% or higher score on exam)
  • Eligibility: You must be a Licensed Physical Therapist (PT), Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA), Student Physical Therapist (SPT).
  • Pre-requisites: None however prior pelvic health knowledge is encouraged.
  • Pre-readings: Pre-readings will be provided electronically to course participants for completion prior to the course. An electronic lecture manual will be provided in the online Learning Center along with the post-course final exam, survey and a Course Completion Certificate (upon successful passing of the course exam)
  • Attendance: Participants are expected to stay through the entire course; please make your plans accordingly. Deduction of contact hours  will occur for participants who leave the course early.

  • Breaks are included: 15 min Morning break, 1 hour lunch break, 15 min Afternoon break
