The Advanced Topics of Pregnancy and Postpartum Physical Therapy (OBA) course is composed of two parts: PART I Lecture (webinar) and PART II Lab (in-person) that together offer 24 contact hours.
PART I (webinar lecture) provides the physical therapy professional with practical, evidence-based knowledge and skill in physical therapy evaluation and intervention with advanced topics in pregnancy and postpartum. Didactic instruction includes: high risk pregnancy medical diagnoses and interventions; special populations and disability in pregnancy; traumatic injuries during pregnancy; maternal birth injuries; considerations; the pregnant athlete; exercise class design; and psychosocial issues in pregnancy and postpartum. Additionally, advanced clinical decision making with these populations is discussed. You must register for and complete Part I Lecture first as it is a prerequisite to Part II lab. PART II (in-person lab) offers skills that are immediately applicable in your clinic and include: refinement of the lumbopelvic examination and special tests; modification of the examination and physical therapy interventions in high risk pregnancy; examination and intervention of thoracic spine, rib cage and external coccyx pain/dysfunction; and various kinesiology taping techniques in pregnancy and postpartum. At the end of the course, all participants will participate in comprehensive situational lab scenarios to apply all skills learned. Participants will be working in groups of 2-3 during labs as both clinicians and patients. Contact hours: 8.0
Requirements: You must be a Licensed Physical Therapist, Physical Therapist Assistant or a 2nd Year or 3rd Year Student Physical Therapist. It is recommended that students have some orthopedic/musculoskeletal coursework in their curriculum prior to attending the course. Those who want to complete the PART II Lab must take the associated PART I Lecture prior to attending the lab.
Associated Certification: This 2-part course is part of the Certificate of Achievement in Obstetric Health Physical Therapy certification program.
