Organization Governance

The Academy of Pelvic Health Physical Therapy (APTA Pelvic Health) is a professional membership association driven by its mission and measures its success in fulfilling its mission-related goals of its strategic plan developed by the elected board members. Governance provides the vision and direction to ensure that an organization is on the right path. The responsibility for governing an association rests with a volunteer board of directors, operating according to the association’s bylaws and working in collaboration with the association’s Executive Director to set the strategic direction, allocate necessary resources and make key decisions that association staff then implement to meet member needs and execute the strategic plan. Volunteer leadership is distributed among committees, task forces and other groups, making volunteer management an important operational function that supports different pillars of the strategic plan. 

It is important that bylaws are current and accurately represent the organization and its membership. The Academy’s bylaws provide comprehensive guidelines in which the association operates. Bylaws provide the following: organization purpose, objectives, component membership, regional and interest groups, meetings, board of directors, standing committees and committee appointments, delegate to the House of Delegates, Nominations and Elections, Finance, Dissolution, Parliamentary Authority, Amendments, association as higher authority, Executive Director, indemnification and liability.


August 9, 2021 – We are delighted to share that the APTA Board of Directors have formally approved the Academy of Pelvic Health Physical Therapy bylaws amendments which has previously been approved by the Academy’s membership via electronic vote. Bylaws Adopted: June 18, 1978. Bylaws Revised: November 1984, February 1987, February 1988, June 1990, May 1991, February 1992, February 1993, February 1994, February 1995, August 1995, November 1995, May 1997, June 1998, April 2001, August 2003, February 2005, February 2006, November 2006, June 2018, August 2021.

2021 Bylaws Amendment Timeline | March-August 2021

The Bylaws Amendment timeline is contingent on how the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) can review and approve the proposed Bylaws Amendments.  The Academy is a component of the APTA and thus must follow their component processes for making Bylaws Amendments. Before the Academy can share the detailed Bylaws Amendment Proposal with the membership, the APTA must review and approve them first. In short, the APTA must approve the changes first, then followed by the Academy Board and membership before getting approved again by the APTA. Below is a quick rundown of the process involved:

  • February 1-24, 2021 – Draft/Review Stage 1 | Bylaw amendments drafted and reviewed by Board and Staff
  • February 24-March 1, 2021 – Review Stage 2 | Academy’s Legal Attorney Reviews proposed changes
  • February 28-March 24, 2021 – Review Stage 3 | APTA Parliamentary Review 1 by APTA Board of Directors (may take 2-3 weeks)
  • March 8, 2021 – Bylaws Town Hall Save-the-Dates is announced to members at the General Business Meetin
  • April 2, 2021 – The APTA Board has approved proposed Bylaws amendments with minor recommended changes and all APTA components reviewed Bylaws amendments to the purpose/objectives sections. Components did not share any objections to the purpose and objectives sections.
  • April 2-5, 2021 – The Academy Board will vote to approve the Bylaws with any changes recommended by the APTA.
  • April 6, 2021 – Proposed Bylaws Amendments and Town Hall invitations are sent to members vie email along with a justification narrative for all change
  • May 6, 2021 – Bylaws Town Hall (8:00pm-9:00pm EST)
  • May 15-June 15, 2021 – Academy Membership Voting window / concurrent with the Academy’s election voting window
  • June 15 – If Academy membership approved the Bylaws Amendments
  • June 16, 2021 – The Academy sent the APTA a copy of member-approved Bylaws. The APTA Board of Directors conducted a Parliamentary Review #2 of member-approved Bylaws amendments.
  • August 4, 2021 – Bylaws approved by the APTA Board of Directors
